In many cases, this problem is caused by a simple blockage, or dirty and/or old filter; causing restricted airflow. it can often be fixed at home in a few minutes.
Here's what causes your Dyson to 'pulse' wether you can fix it at home, or wether it may need professional repair.
What Does “Pulsing” Mean?
Pulsing is can be described as when your Dyson repeatedly:
- Starts and stops
- Speeds up and slows down
- Makes a 'revving' noise
- Runs for a few seconds, making said 'revving' noise, then cuts out
1. Check for blockages
If your vacuum has just started pulsing, and you usually keep it well maintained, the problem is likely just a blockage.
Check:
- Down the wand, look through it, see if you can see light coming in from the other side.
- The cleaner head, check behind the roller where the air path starts, remove any obstructions or buildup you see.
- The bin inlet, especially on later machines like the V10, V11 and V15, they commonly clog where the wand connects; also make sure to check the 'air inlet' on the cyclone, towards the top of the cyclone assembly, is clear.
2. Wash the filter
All current Dyson cordless models have a washable filter, or filters, for the V7 and V8 models. To clean it:
- Remove the filter
- Rinse under cold water only (although a little bit of lukewarm and some soap never hurts, just ensure it is thoroughly rinsed out)
- Leave to dry for at least 24 hours
3. Empty your machine, and free the cyclone of any loose debris.
Even if your bin doesn't look full, it may be impacting your machines performance. Empty your bin, and ensure the shroud is free of any debris, give the cyclones a relatively light but sharp tap with your palm, you'll be surprised the amount of fine dust it dislodges from internal components, although if you think it needs a proper clean and service, feel free to contact us.
If your machine looks free of blockages, but js still pulsing or cutting out, it might be time to pick up the phone.
If the air path looks clear, filter is clean, and cyclones are a clean as you can get them, you might need to contact a professional, because this issue may be:
- A weak battery
- Motor issue
- PCB (Control Board) fault
- Water / moisture damage
These all usually require careful diagnosis and repair.
