Is Your Dyson V15 Starting and Stopping, Then Working Fine? Here's Why.

Before you buy a new battery, read this. If your Dyson V15 starts, stops after 2 seconds, then eventually runs normally, there's a much more likely cause...

If your Dyson V15 is stuck in this loop, you're not alone:

It's a strange, but specific and known pattern; it throws a lot of people off, because the machine isn't dead, and it isn't consistently faulty either. And there is no indication on the display as to what could be wrong, unlike that of when you have a blocked airway, or flat battery. That inconsistency is actually the biggest clue we can use to diagnose what is wrong with your machine.

This is very unlikely to be t a blockage, battery or filter problem.

With most Dyson cordless faults pulsing, weak suction, cutting out under load), the first thing to check is airflow; the filter, wand, cyclones, and floor tool or accessory. A blockage or dirty filter tends to cause a consistent symptom, restricted airflow, a revving sound, weak suction throughout use. What you're experiencing is different: cycling with no airflow symptoms, that then resolves itself and runs fine.

Quick way to tell them apart! Pulsing/airflow faults sound like the motor is straining: a revving, surging noise while it's still running. A PCB fault looks more like the machine losing power completely and restarting, and if you're not sure, don't just write your machine off, seek professional advice, take it to a local vacuum shop, or drop us a message or email.

So what's actually happening?

The PCB (printed circuit board, sometimes called the control board) is essentially the brain of the vacuum, it's the little computer inside, and it manages power delivery from the battery to the motor, handles your input (change of speed etc.), and constantly monitors things like current draw and temperature.

When a PCB is starting to fail, a very common symptom is exactly what you're seeing:

This kind of intermittent, self-resolving fault is a classic sign of PCB failure, rather than a mechanical or airflow issue. It's frustrating because the machine works fine after a few goes, which could be seen as a software glitch, but it's sort of in-between, it isn't a mechanical issue, and it isn't a software issue.

Why Does This Happen on the V15 Specifically?

The V15 has a more complex control board than other models. it's managing the LCD screen, the piezo sensor (the dust-counting/particle sensor), auto power adjustment based off the sensor, temperature regulation, and more, alongside standard motor control, and possible built-in obsolescence on Dyson's part- why else would they engineer the machine to have such fine output margins from the capacitors, that after they only slightly degrade, the machine no longer works...

Can It Be Repaired?

Yes, PCB faults on the V15 are a known and repairable issue, and it's not always a body replacement; it's possible that the capacitors in question, or whole motor including PCB, can be replaced.
